History:
Hillingdon Community Centre is housed in the ّWalter Pomeroy Hall which was opened on the 15th November 1975 by Mrs Pomeroy in memory of her
husband who had worked for many years on the local council. It is a rather
unique French made building which has caused one or two problems when
repairs or replacements were needed.
The first groups to use the building were for Californian Round Dancing which had originally met in Oak Farm School. Over the years the centre has seen many
people from the U.S.A. & Canada visiting. They used to have to go to the Civic Centre to pay for their hire until a Chairman & a Secretary was installed.
Over the years there have been many improvements from having full central
heating installed to having electric shutters installed to divide off the halls,
and a new fitted kitchen.
The Community Centre has two small halls which can be converted to one larger hall for special events. The smaller hall is for the Playgroup which runs every morning in term time. When the playgroup started there was quite a stir when princess Diana came to visit.
With the changing times the dancing sessions have now been replaced by Short Mat Bowls and the O.A.P.s Club 87 grows from strength to strength with several members now in their 90s.
Other groups include:
- Yoga
- Aerobics
- Colham Ladies Club
- Bingo
- Theres no Business like Show Business(singing & dancing for 4 15 years)
The hall is also available for private lets. |
